The Charleston market is experiencing exploding growth in knowledge-based occupations at rates better than even the State of South Carolina or the nation.
The Port of Charleston serves more than 150 countries and is one of the most productive ports in the world.
A key economic engine for South Carolina, nearly $12 billion in wages and more than 260,000 jobs are related to the Port. The Port has the ability to host Post-Panamax vessels, the largest shipping vessels in the world. The military and healthcare are two more important industries to the Charleston economy, contributing $3 billion and $2.3 billion annually to the economy respectively. The military employs over 22,000 in the region and represents almost every agency in the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. In healthcare, over 20,000 are employed in four major hospital systems, with over 800 degrees awarded each year from the Medical University of South Carolina.
The economic drivers in Charleston are diverse, but since being named by Conde Nast Traveler as the “Best City in the World”, the importance of the Travel Industry cannot be understated. More than 4 million visitors per year provide an economic impact of $3 billion.
Boeing will invest an additional $1.1 billion over eight years and create 2,000 new jobs to their present 6,000 employees at its manufacturing complex for the 787 Dreamliner.
